Diamond Paints defeated Al Khan 12 ½-10 in the final to lift the Punjab
Polo Cup at the Lahore Polo Club ground. Six-goal Guillermo Guitino of
Argentina and Asif Tiwana, who slammed four of his own, out shone a
brilliant performance by India\'s Dhruvpal Godara, who scored all his
team\'s 10 goals.
Diamond Paints, who had a 1 1/2-goal handicap, enjoyed a 5 ½-3
lead at the conclusion of the action packed first chukker. Cuitino
converted penalty hits from 40 and 60 yards respectively while Asif and
Ahmed Ali Tiwana added one each for the winners. Godara led the lone
battle for Al Khan with three goals, which were also hits from 60, 30
and spot penalties.
Cuitino found the target for his sixth personal goal while
Asif completed his tally of four as
Diamond Paints took a clear 12 ½-9 lead in the final chukker. Godara
refused to give up and continued his effort to score and he was
rewarded in the dying moments of the match but by that time it was a
case of too little too late.
Meanwhile, Hissam Ali Hyder scored five goals while Faaiz
Rahim Khan and Jot a Chavanne found the target thrice each to help Bank
Alfalah defeat Lindt Chocolate 11-7 ½ in the subsidiary final and
finish third in the tournament. Diego Araya was Lindt Chocolate\'s best
player with six goals while Sufi Mohammad Hairs scored once for the
losers, who had a ½ goal handicap.
